Perl is a very popular utility and language which is available on Unix and Non-Unix operating systems. It is freely available under the GNU license and has been ported to a variety of systems including Unix, MS-Windows and OpenVMS. Perl is a single program which is comprises a superset of functionality based on the following Unix Utilities: awk, ed, grep, sed, sh & tr mixed with functionality from the C programming language. It supports loadable modules, Unix System Calls, Networking (Sockets) and Object Oriented Functionality. There are hundreds of freely available Perl Modules which provide everything from native Internet Protocol Support (FTP, POP, SMTP, SNMP) through Database Integration (Informix, Oracle, Sybase, etc).
