	     -------------------------------

   Speaker: Steven M. Bellovin,
             AT&T Bell Laboratories.

	Main Presentation:
	------------------

Firewalls are a collection of components which provide controls on
the flow of data between two networks. They are commonly used to
shield an internal network from direct access to the Internet.
Unigroup is very pleased to have Steven M. Bellovin of AT&T Bell
Laboratories as the speaker for our meeting on Firewalls and
	Internet Security.

Steven M. Bellovin received a B.A. degree from Columbia University,
and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While a graduate student, he
helped create netnews; for this, he and the other perpetrators
were awarded the 1995 Usenix Lifetime Achievement Award. He has
been at AT&T Bell Laboratories since 1982, where he does
research in networks, security, and why the two don't get along.
Mr. Bellovin is the co-author of the recent book ``Firewalls and
Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker''. He is currently
focusing on how to write systems that are inherently more secure.

The following topics will be discussed at this meeting:
	-	What is a firewall.
	-	Why a firewall should be used.
	-	The different types of firewalls, their advantages
		and disadvantages.
	-	Where firewalls should be used.
	-	The limitations of firewalls.

4.	NEWSLETTER
	----------

A few months ago, the publisher of New York Unix Magazine informed us that the
magazine was "going on hold." (That's why you havn't seen an issue lately).

Ross Ziskind has volunteered to restart the newsletter and he saw that
the first and second issues had gone out. Thanks Ross!
Keep an eye out for the next issue (assuming you are on our US Mail mailing
list), its already arriving around NYC.

To keep the newsletter going, the two biggest problems to overcome are:

	a) Volunteers to see that it gets out
	b) Content material

If you have any ideas or can help contribute to our newsletter, please make
them known at our meetings and/or let us know by EMail. If you know anyone
who has experience in sending out a newsletter, we can always use some good
advice. Ross can be reached via email to editor@unigroup.org.

5.	PC EXPO in NYC
	--------------

PC EXPO will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on the following
days and times:

	Tuesday June 20, 1995 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
	Wednesday	June 21, 1995 9:30 am - 5:00 pm	*
	Thursday	June 22, 1995 9:30 am - 4:00 pm	*

					* (Level 3 opens at 10am on Wed & Thu.)

We are planning to give out Complimentary Exhibit Passes for PC EXPO at
our May 18th meeting. Aside from sending in the pass, online registration
is reportedly available.

Deadline for online registration is June 16.

Trade Show Information via the Web:	http://www.shownet.com

Note:	While Blenheim.com is a valid domain name, when I tried it today it
did not appear to have an IP number - ie. Telnet registration doesn't
appear to be online yet. I remember that last year Telnet
registration did work as we got closer to the show.

As usual, Unigroup will be exhibiting at PC EXPO and we again ask for
volunteers to help us staff our booth. If you can offer any time from an
hour to half or a full day, we would greatly appreciate it. Please contact
us immediately if you think you can help us out.

Unigroup will also hold a general meeting at PC EXPO after the show
tentatively on 6/21. Please watch our Web Page and Unilist for further
announcements.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope to see you all at Unigroup's May 1995 meeting...
